Your rights are at risk, and action is needed. The reason is that many governing bodies are opposing legislation needed to modernize and strengthen state laws that require elected officials to conduct business in public and that guarantee your right to obtain public records – the Open Public Meetings and Open Public Records Acts (OPMA and OPRA). Why? Because most government officials don’t welcome public oversight. So, they’re adopting resolutions – nearly uniform from town to town – that contain misleading statements about the proposed legislation (S1045 and S1046). Click here for NJFOG’s counterpoints to the misstatements, along with a 1-page fact sheet from bill sponsor Senator Loretta Weinberg.
The municipal resolutions are part of an aggressive campaign by the Municipal Clerks Association of New Jersey and the New Jersey League of Municipalities to spread misinformation about the bills and to manufacture alarm.
