Fairfield adopts e-mail retention policy

This is a noteworthy example of a governmental agency taking positive, timely steps to improve transparency.  We also applaud the agency’s openness to a good suggestion from the public!  -NJFOG

(Slightly paraphrased below. See the blog post for a link to the resolution.)

At its September 1, 2015 meeting, the Fairfield Township Committee passed Resolution 139-2015 establishing an e-mail retention policy that John Paff had drafted and sent to Township Solicitor John Carr on August 20, 2015.  In summary, the policy requires the Township Administrator to establish a central GMail address and requires all Township officers and employees to cc all e-mails related to Township business to that address.

The policy may be temporary because the Township Administrator is currently looking to establish a new Township website.  The new site will probably be robust enough to assign a Township e-mail address to each official, appointee and employee who needs one and securely retain e-mails.
