Governor Christie has conditionally vetoed Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) broad reform legislation. Christie claims to have rejected the legislation (S-708/A-2184) because it shields union members from cooperating in investigations, and he is calling on lawmakers to back a version of the legislation similar to that adopted in New York. Both states must adopt substantially similar versions of the bills in order for a law to take effect.
In 2015, legislation was passed that brought the PANYNJ under the open public records laws of both states. Public meeting provisions are included in pending broad reform bills. There is more than one broad reform bill before the NJ legislature right now — in addition to S708, there is also S706 and S696.
