Public or Private: Municipal alert system records

A Nutley Commissioner up for re-election is questioned over what appears to be his use of municipal alert system email addresses for his own political campaign. Essex Watch founder and Nutley resident Lee Dorry, who himself received a campaign-related email sent to a personal email address that was provided for town alerts, is quoted in the article and points out that improperly tapping town resources in this manner interferes with a fair election process. Many towns take the position that alert system email addresses are private and not subject to release under OPRA, so members of the public — including other political candidates — would not have access to them. -NJFOG
