Monmouth County court rules police dashcam video is available under OPRA

Police videos — or rather, public access to them — is a hot topic these days in the wake of an Appellate Court ruling restricting access to police records and the introduction of legislation (S788) proposing to exempt police videos and 911 calls from OPRA. So when we hear about a member of the public winning a round, it’s sort of a big deal.

On Feb. 18, Monmouth County Assignment Judge Lisa P. Thornton ordered Neptune Township to turn over a police dash cam video that captured a man who allegedly resisted arrest and obstructed justice. Thornton also ordered the Township to pay the plaintiff John Paff’s attorney fees and costs.
